William & Mary's School of Marine Science (SMS) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) offers graduate degrees in marine science at the master’s and doctoral level. Collaborations among SMS, the W&M Program in Public Policy, and W&M Law School allow students who are interested in resource management and policy to complete additional course work for a sub-concentration in marine policy, or with successful application to a joint degree program, a M.S. or Ph.D. in Marine Science and a Master of Public Policy (MPP).
We currently have more than 50 faculty and 85 full-time students in 4 academic departments. With an annual operating budget of more than $46 million, three campuses, outstanding facilities with state-of-the-art instrumentation, a large fleet of coastal and estuarine research vessels, and ready access to marine, coastal, and estuarine systems, the program offers outstanding education and research opportunities for students who seek advanced careers in academia, government, or the private sector.
