Boston Fish Pier and Red’s Best

Red’s Best, founded by Jared Auerbaach in 2008, supports local fishing communities in the USA by providing a way for consumers to have direct access to the freshest seafood. A native of Boston, Jared worked on commercial fishing vessels off the coast of both Alaska and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. During his work, Jared was witness to the struggles traditional fishing communities were faced with due to advancement of technology and government regulations of open oceans. In light of his experience, Jared set out to create a brand to support the livelihoods of American fishermen and fisheries harvest. Through the development of proprietary data management software Red’s best is able to track daily catches as they land, and aggregate fisherman catches packaging, labeling, and shipping them in an “unbroken chain of custody” to reduce the distance between fishermen and consumers. This field trip involves a tour of Red’s Best facility, located on the historic Boston Fish Pier, by Jared himself and a stop at the Boston Public Market & Eatery, which hosts one of Red’s Best local fish markets.

City of Chelsea, P.O.R.T. Park and DPA

The City of Chelsea contains one of the ten Massachusetts Designated Port Areas (DPA) along Chelsea Creek. DPAs were created by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to promote and protect water-dependent industrial uses. This trip will involve a visit to the DPA  and the P.O.R.T Park and Rock Chapel Marine. The PORT (Publicly Organized Recreation Territory) was once a 13 million gallon oil tank farm that has been converted into a multi-use waterfront with a road-salt terminal, recreation area, and wildlife habitat landscape. The project has received various accolades for its design and contribution to the city’s waterfront. While there, folks will get to hear from one of the P.O.R.T Park designers and a city official to learn about the city’s planning efforts-both in the context of the harbor, DPA plans, and coastal resiliency.
